My name is Debra Barton RN, PhD, FASCO and I am the McMahan-McKinley Endowed Professor of Gerontology at the University of Tennessee, College of Nursing. I have worked in the area of oncology with people and their families facing a cancer diagnosis since I began in nursing in 1985. My very first nursing position was in Knoxville, TN in 1985-1986 at St. Mary’s Hospital. I became interested in working with people with cancer because of my background in social work and I enjoyed working with families and helping people maintain a high quality of life through the time of being diagnosed with cancer, receiving treatment and beyond. I have been recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in symptom management as it relates to cancer. Throughout my career, I have participated in national committees at the National Cancer Institute and also in leadership in large research networks, such as NRG Oncology, that focuses on improving both cancer outcomes and the patient experience during a diagnosis of cancer. I graduated with a PhD in Nursing from the University of Indiana at Indianapolis in 2002. I have been a funded investigator in oncology symptom management since 2002, having developed, implemented and completed 14 large multi-site intervention trials in various cancer related symptoms including cancer-related fatigue, cognitive impairment, hot flashes, neuropathy, sleep impairment, chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting, and sexual health.
